It's no secret that we're all going through a tough time financially, particularly at this time of year. We're all trying to stick to a tight budget and save all the pennies we can but it's not always easy. Here are a few tips to help you keep your household bills low:

Satellite & Cable

It's a luxury that many of us have but could you do without it? Freeview has a lot more channels now and it's free. If you're still very keen to keep hold of your satellite or cable, the best thing to do is to ring up your provider and see if you can get a better deal, perhaps you can reduce your package. You could always shop around and see if another provider could offer you a better deal.

If you have broadband and a phone line it can often work out cheaper if you can get all of these things incorporated into one package.

Gas & Electric

Again, this is something you need to shop around for and find the provider who can offer you the best deal. It's important to look for a deal that offers a fixed price so you won't see your bills shooting up a few months down the line.

You can help keep your bills low by keeping your usage low. Things like your heating and hot water can really bump up your bills in the winter months. Try to keep your thermostat low and only heat the rooms that you use most often like the living area, kitchen and bedrooms. Baths are very tempting this time of year but swap them for showers when you can. Make sure you keep all lights and appliances turned off when you're not using them.

Groceries:

Keep an eye on how much you're spending when you hit the supermarket. Ensure you only buy what you need so nothing gets wasted. Keep an eye out for any deals to ensure you're getting value for money. Packs of frozen veg are often cheaper than buying fresh and it also means nothing will get wasted as you can just get out what you need. Cut down on impulse buying by making a list of everything you need and sticking to it.
